Stable Conditions

Excellent Fishing Conditions

The Missouri is fishing well right now with stable flows and good water temperatures. Walleye and sauger are active throughout the system. Catfish are also biting in deeper holes. Focus on current breaks, wing dams, and slack water areas for best results.

Fishing Zones

Gavins Point Dam to Yankton HOT SPOT

Target Species

Walleye Sauger White Bass

Best Techniques

Jigging Live Bait Rigs

Access

Multiple boat ramps, shore fishing available at tailrace

Current Report: The tailrace and first few miles below Gavins Point are producing excellent walleye and sauger action. Fish are stacked in the current seams and eddies. Use ¼ to ½ oz jigs tipped with minnows or soft plastics. Target depths of 12-25 feet. The bite has been best during low-light periods, but mid-day action has also been consistent. White bass are also mixing in and providing non-stop action on lighter tackle.

Yankton to Vermillion Good

Target Species

Walleye Catfish Sauger

Best Techniques

Wing Dam Fishing Trolling

Access

Public ramps at Yankton, Meckling, Maskell areas

Current Report: This stretch is producing consistent walleye action, especially around wing dams and current breaks. Focus on the slack water side of wing dams using jigs or three-way rigs with minnows. Depths of 15-30 feet are most productive. Catfish are also active in deeper holes and can be targeted with cut bait or prepared baits. The bite picks up in the afternoon as the sun warms the water slightly.

Catfish Sauger Carp

Bottom Fishing Cut Bait

Access

Urban access points, boat ramps near downtown

Current Report: Catfish action remains steady in the deeper river sections. Target depths of 20-35 feet using fresh cut bait (shad or skipjack). Sauger are scattered but can be found working current breaks and channel edges. The bite has been slower than upstream sections, but patient anglers are still finding success. Best fishing times are dawn and dusk.

Top Producer Baits

Live Minnows (Fatheads & Shiners)

The #1 producer for walleye and sauger. Use on jigs or live bait rigs.

Soft Plastic Swimbaits

3-4" paddle tails in natural colors working well on jig heads.

Cut Skipjack or Shad

Best for catfish. Fresh cut bait produces the most bites.

Blade Baits & Jigging Spoons

Effective for vertical jigging in deeper holes and current seams.

Pro Tips & Tactics

Target Wing Dams

Fish the slack water side and downstream points of wing dams. This is where walleye and sauger hold to ambush baitfish. Work your presentation slowly along the bottom.

Read the Current

Look for current seams, eddies, and breaks. Fish position in these areas to conserve energy while waiting for food to drift by. Cast upstream and work your bait naturally with the flow.

Electronics Are Key

Use your depth finder to locate structure, depth changes, and suspended fish. Side-imaging can be invaluable for finding wing dams, snags, and fish-holding structure.

Adjust Weight for Current

Use heavier jigs (½ to 1 oz) in strong current to maintain bottom contact. In slack water, lighter presentations (¼ to ⅜ oz) allow for a more natural action.

Time Your Trip

Dawn and dusk produce the most consistent action, but don't overlook mid-day fishing in winter when water temperatures rise slightly with sun exposure.

Safety & Regulations Reminder

Life jackets required - Wear your PFD at all times on the water

Check flow rates - High flows create dangerous conditions

Know your limits - Walleye/Sauger: 4 fish combined daily limit

Valid fishing license required - SD or multi-state license

Weather aware - Winter conditions change rapidly

Navigation hazards - Watch for debris, wing dams, and sandbars

Always check current SD Game, Fish & Parks regulations before your trip. Regulations can change seasonally.

Weekly Tip

Ice Fishing Pro Tip

When the bite slows down, try "dead-sticking" — set your rod motionless with bait just off the bottom and wait. Sometimes inactive fish won't chase but will strike a stationary presentation. Keep a second rod with an active jigging presentation to draw fish in.

Quick Safety Reminder

Always check ice thickness before venturing out. 4" for walking, 5-7" for snowmobiles/ATVs, 8-12" for small vehicles. When in doubt, stay off! Ice conditions can vary across a single lake.
